As the result of a routine traffic stop by municipal police officers escalating into something much more, Osvaldo Medina-Mercado was shot in the leg and Miguel Ángel Burgos in the head. Burgos, a minor, died shortly after being shot. Medina-Mercado died later but not as a result of the injury.
