This lawsuit, brought under state law by the plaintiffs (Emilia Strong Sykes, Barbara Sykes, and Vernon Sykes) against the defendants (Tuskegee University and university administrators Benjamin F. Payton, Peter Spears, and Minnie R. Austin) concerns the results of a university beauty pageant. Jurisdiction is invoked pursuant to 28 U.S.C. § 1332 (diversity of citizenship).
