Douglas C. Riner was convicted in state court of murdering his wife and his conviction was affirmed on appeal. Riner is the primary beneficiary of an insurance policy on his wife's life. Prior to his conviction, the insurance company filed this interpleader action in order to resolve the conflicting claims to the proceeds of the policy between Riner and the alternative beneficiary.
