In 1991, Carol Hollowood became a registered nurse first assistant ("RNFA") in the labor and delivery department of St. Luke's Episcopal-Presbyterian Hospital in Chesterfield, Missouri. On June 1, 1998, Hollowood appeared on a local television news broadcast and accused St. Luke's of "jeopardizing the health of mothers and babies" by altering the shift assignments and responsibilities of the labor and delivery RNFAs.
