St. Mary's Hospital in East St. Louis hired Eileen Shepard as a social worker, a position in which she met Beatrice Neely, then 87 years old and one of the Hospital's patients. Eileen gained the confidence of Neely and her guardian Clara Person (Neely's daughter), who invited Eileen and her husband Everett to move into Neely's home.
