Justice HARTMAN delivered the opinion of the court:

A jury convicted defendant Bernard Ellis of the first-degree murder of Gerard Hardy. He was given a 55-year prison sentence. His subsequently filed post-conviction petition, after a hearing, was denied. Defendant's motion to consolidate his direct appeal and his appeal from the denial of the post-conviction petition was allowed. Defendant appeals his conviction and sentence, the denial of his motions for a new trial...
