The defendant, Lawrence Clouse, was convicted of murder in the first degree, § 565.020.1, RSMo 1994, and of armed criminal action, § 571.015, RSMo 1994, in the circuit court of Clay County. Following a penalty phase, the jury returned a verdict recommending life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. The trial court sentenced the defendant in accordance with the jury verdict.
