On May 20, 1994, the State charged Gershone Johnson by bill of information with possession of 28 grams or more but less than 200 grams of cocaine, La.Rev.Stat. Ann. § 40:967 (West 1992 & Supp.1996), and with illegal use of a weapon, La.Rev.Stat. Ann. § 14:94(E) (West Supp.1996). Johnson pleaded not guilty.
