Jack R. Hicks bought a house in Spokane, Washington, in 1970. In 1976, he married Fernanda Arenas Chacon. Together they moved to Colombia, South America, in the late 1970s, where they remained until sometime in the late 1980s.

On May 23, 1977, Mr. Hicks and Ms. Chacon signed a community property agreement in which they agreed that all of their property was community property. That same day, Mr. Hicks quitclaimed the Spokane property to himself...
