The matter before the court is defendant Griffin's Rule 35(a) motion to correct an illegal sentence. Because Griffin's offenses occurred prior to November 1, 1987, the version of Rule 35(a) then in effect applies and allows the court to correct an illegal sentence at any time. United States v.
