HAYS, Justice.

On January 27, 1989, the nude body of Pamela Smith was found floating in a barrow pit in Pope County. Mrs. Smith had been missing for four days. The body had been in the water for about twenty-four hours. Death was attributed to a loss of blood from multiple stab wounds. There were numerous abrasions and contusions on the body and evidence of sexual abuse.
