Justice HEIPLE delivered the opinion of the court:

After a bench trial, defendant James Kerwin was found guilty of three counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault in violation of section 12-14(b)(1) of the Criminal Code of 1961 (the Code) (Ill.Rev.Stat.1989, ch. 38, par. 12-14(b)(1)). The trial court entered judgment on the first count and sentenced defendant to 15 years' imprisonment. The appellate court affirmed with one justice dissenting. (
