In 1990, Brian Derek Steptoe, a minor, was injured in an automobile accident while riding as a passenger in a car insured by Auto-Owners Insurance Company. Brian Steptoe and his mother, Jalayne Steptoe, eventually settled their claims arising out of the accident with Auto-Owners; however, the settlement excluded personal injury protection (PIP) coverage.
