In April 1992, the State charged defendant, Melvin A. Shepherd, with driving while under the influence of alcohol (DUI) (Ill.Rev.Stat. 1991, ch. 95½, par. 11-501) and improper lane usage (Ill.Rev.Stat.1991, ch. 95½, par. 11-709).
