Initially, after a stipulated bench trial, defendant, William Horton, was convicted of the armed robbery (Ill.Rev.Stat. 1987, ch. 38, par. 18-2(a) (now 720 ILCS 5/18-2(a) (West 1992))) and the aggravated battery (Ill.Rev.Stat.1987, ch. 38, par. 12-4(b)(1) (now codified, as amended, at 720 ILCS 5/12-4(b)(1) (West 1992))) of John Marzolo.
