On July 2, 1992, the jury in this section 1983 action awarded the deceased's estate $500,000.00 ($250,000.00 in compensatory damages and $250,000.00 in punitive damages) for the deceased's pain and suffering, a consequence of his bodily bashing by several penal guards at the Río Piedras State Penitentiary in September of 1987.
