The defendant, Susan Pratt, was charged by indictment in Madison County with one count of aggravated battery to a child (Ill. Rev.Stat. 1987, ch. 38, par. 12-4.3) and four counts of cruelty to children and others (Ill.Rev.Stat.1987, ch. 23, par. 2368) based on injuries suffered by her infant twin daughters, Christina and Jessica.
