On April 16, 1989, a car defendant was driving was stopped by a police officer and a gun was found protruding from under the seat. The car was registered in the name of defendant's mother. Defendant was charged with unauthorized possession of an offensive weapon in violation of Iowa Code §§ 724.1 and 724.3 (1989).
