This case began as a civil rights suit under 42 U.S.C. § 1983, charging racial discrimination in housing, with pendent counts under state law. The jury brought in a verdict for the defendants on four of the five counts, leaving only a count for breach of contract under Illinois law against defendant Village of Summit — but on that count it found liability and awarded the plaintiffs...
