Petitioner Joseph Beringer ("petitioner") was charged with the murder of Joanne Barkauskas in 1981. He was tried and convicted for the murder in 1983, but the Appellate Court of Illinois for the First District reversed his conviction, finding that the prosecution's conduct during the 1983 trial "was so egregious as to deny [petitioner] a fair trial."
