In January 1979, Earl Peterson and two other persons were indicted for murder, attempted murder, armed violence, and attempted armed robbery in Cook County, Illinois. One of Peterson's co-defendants pleaded guilty; Peterson and the remaining co-defendant were tried simultaneously with separate juries.
