Defendant assigns error to the trial court's denial of its request for an inquiry into the prosecuting witness' competence to testify and in allowing her to testify without first determining her to be capable of distinguishing truth from non-truth. N.C. Gen.Stat. § 8C-1, Rule 601 of the North Carolina Rules of Evidence provides:
