On August 6, 1986, the defendant threw a liquid containing a high concentration of nitric acid in his wife's face. As a result, he was indicted for assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon and mayhem. At trial, he raised the defense of lack of criminal responsibility, colloquially known as an "insanity defense." He was convicted on both indictments and sentenced to long terms in prison.
