On October 17, 1975, after more than thirty years of research, Dr. Endre Balazs applied for a patent for "Ultrapure Hyaluronic Acid and the Use Thereof." On February 27, 1979, that patent was issued as United States Patent No. 4,141,973 ("the '973 patent").
