WHITING, Justice.

Robert D. Sonney, Jr.,1 a carman employed by Norfolk and Western Railway Company (the railroad), who was injured during the course of his employment on August 13, 1984, brought this action against the railroad under the Federal Employers' Liability Act (FELA) to recover $1,500,000 in damages. On October 21, 1985, the trial court entered judgment on a jury verdict for that amount. We granted the railroad an appeal.
