On June 28, 1983, the vessel Peter Maersk, proceeding upstream on the Cape Fear River, approximately 15 miles from the Atlantic Ocean, struck a submerged cement object which ripped the ship's hull and resulted in the discharge of about 1,000 barrels of oil.
