On October 29, 1985, Ezell Goodwin and his wife, Alberta M. Goodwin, henceforth referred to as "petitioners," filed a petition in the Circuit Court of Cedar County seeking to adopt Vanessa Renee Kolman ("Vanessa"), born September 8, 1976, the daughter of Mary Louise Kolman ("Mary") and Allan Duane Kolman ("Allan").
