This § 1983 class action was initially commenced by inmate Bobby Battle, pro se, challenging various conditions of confinement at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary in 1972. The district court held that conditions in the Oklahoma prison system violated the Eighth Amendment proscription against cruel and unusual punishment. The subsequent history of the controversy is detailed in the opinions cited in the margin.
