On April 6, 1983, a Suffolk County grand jury indicted the defendant, John J. Salemme, for murder. G.L.c. 265, § 1 (1984 ed.). On Februrary 13, 1984, a jury returned a verdict of guilty of murder in the first degree on the indictment.
