CLARKE, Justice.

Leroy Stewart was convicted of the murder of his wife and sentenced to life imprisonment.1 On February 25, 1983, the Stewarts' next door neighbor heard Martha Stewart call for help. She called the police. When officer Larry Edwards approached the house she heard Leroy Stewart say, "One move or one more step and you're dead." She then heard a loud blast and called the police again. Another neighbor looked out of her window...
