At about 2:30 in the morning of January 5, 1981, three men gained entry to the home shared by Samuel Hughes and his fiance Karen Hackney. While Hackney was held at gunpoint in the downstairs den, Hughes was led upstairs to his bedroom and forced to open a safe.
