We granted the People's petition for a writ of certiorari to review the judgment of the Court of Appeals in People v. Peterson, 633 P.2d 1088 (Colo.App.1981). The Court of Appeals remanded the case for a new trial because of the district court's failure to sever trial of the substantive criminal charges from trial of the charge of possession of a weapon by a previous offender.
