OPINION

MATTHEWS, Justice.

James Adkinson was charged in a two-count indictment with the offenses of manslaughter under AS 11.15.0401 and negligent homicide under AS 11.15.080.2 Both charges arose from an incident which occurred on October 10, 1976, when Steven Butts, his brother, David, and a friend, Jim Leonard, were returning to their truck after an overnight camping trip along the Knik River....
