Jones was hired by the Department of Human Resources in the summer of 1976 as a boiler room operator, and he worked in that capacity at the Governor Morehead School in Raleigh until 3 December 1976. He was dismissed from his employment at that time, apparently because his job performance was not to the satisfaction of his supervisors.
