After a jury trial in the Circuit Court, Criminal Division, of Cook County, Illinois, during which they were represented by privately retained counsel, petitioners were each convicted of the crime of rape (Ill.Rev. Stat.1963, ch. 38, ¶ 11-1) and each was sentenced to a term of forty to sixty years in the state penitentiary. The Public Defender was appointed to represent them on appeal, and their convictions...
