Some time after 11 P.M. on April 27, 1973, Mrs. Maria Marshall was bludgeoned to death on the sidewalk adjacent to 1 Mt. Hope Street in Roslindale, Boston. There is no doubt that the defendant Joseph Ravida wielded the mortal weapon. Indicted for murder in the first degree, he was convicted after jury trial of murder in the second degree and given the mandatory sentence of life imprisonment.
