The ultimate issue presented by this appeal is whether the juvenile division of the district court has the authority to commit a minor directly to a State mental institution under G.S. 7A-286(6). The answer is no.

Appellant and appellee both seem to agree that respondent is in need of treatment for mental illness. The record on appeal is lengthy and we do not believe a review of the facts is necessary...
