PAOLINO, Justice.

These cases are here on the state's exceptions to certain rulings by a justice of the Superior Court. They were heard together in the Superior Court and, on appeal, in this court. Since the issues are the same in each case, we shall refer only to State v. Steven P. Carlone, but our conclusions shall apply equally to all the cases.
