On April 2, 1968, at approximately 4:40 a. m., a collision occurred between the United States Coast Guard utility boat CG-40459, headed eastbound toward the Gulf of Mexico in the Corpus Christi channel and the lead barge of the four-barge tow of the M/V MARY E.
