A smoke inspector employed by the air pollution control bureau of the city of Detroit often stationed himself 700 feet from the smoke stacks of defendant-appellant and compared the color of the emissions coming from them with the colors known by him to be given on the Ringelmann chart, the measurement of density of air pollution used by the city. The color of the emissions observed was darker than that permissible and defendant was eventually found...
