This case involves a process patent. The use of the process on certain metals, particularly ferrous, results in a tough and wear resistant surface, with greatly increased fatigue strength. Thus "Helicopter rotor blade dampers have service life tripled."1 It has been described as a "new technology" and there is no doubt that the description is accurate.
