In April, 1954, Fred Russell Harris was convicted of armed robbery by a California Superior Court. He had pled guilty, but did not have the assistance of counsel at any stage of the proceedings against him. He now seeks a writ of habeas corpus, claiming that his constitutional rights have been violated (1) by the failure of the magistrate at his Preliminary Examination to assign counsel and (2) by the similar failure of the presiding judge...
