This case arose as a result of an injury sustained by the plaintiff, Lydia Nuckoles, a citizen of Staunton, Virginia, when she stepped into a small gray box which had been placed on the floor of the defendant Woolworth Company's Staunton, Virginia, store by one of its clerks.
